What is Micellar Water? Should You Use It?

Watching beauty gurus on YouTube, micellar water was mentioned quite a bit as part many daily skincare routines. Wondering why micellar water was such a big deal, I went out and bought my own bottle at Marshalls, for $4.99.

I’ve used the micellar water every day since, and the first day I used it, I could instantly feel the effects. The micellar water left my skin feeling cleaner and more supple and hydrated than any other cleanser I had tried. But then I wondered, what makes micellar water different from other cleansers? What is micellar water?

Micellar water is primarily made up of micelles. Micelles are a cluster of tiny cleansing oil molecules suspended in soft water. This is according to dermatologist Hadley King of Skinney Medspa. Micelles attach to all that gunk, grime, and dirt on your face. Instead of acting like other soaps and cleansers, though, and foaming up on your skin, micellar water actually dissolves all that bad stuff, leaving you with just your beautiful skin. It works differently from other soaps and cleansers in another way too. The regular soaps and cleansers only dissolve the bonds between the dirt or makeup on your face and your skin to make it something able to be wiped off. However, when you have to wipe something, it’s harder and more time-consuming to get off, and may require rinsing or other tools like toners before it all comes off. But with micellar water, micelles don’t need actual water to work, so rinsing is a no-no. With micellar water, you do not and should not rinse your face, since the micelles go to work with or without water and get rid of the junk on your skin without any mess or extra tools.

Should I use Micellar Water?

Well, I think you should. 😉 Micellar water, at least most of the ones I have seen, don’t need to be expensive in order to work well. Many brands sell micellar water for under $10 and from my experience, they all work phenomenally on my skin. Sometimes simple is the best way to go.
